Ten years ago to the day, I recorded this cover of The Magnetic Fields' "Meaningless" from their magnum opus 69 Love Songs. Then, a few months later on March 28th, 2012, I recorded a cover of "Acoustic Guitar" - on an upright piano, no less - from the same album. I was 20, and I was still finding my footing as a vocalist, musician, and recordist. Still am, actually. There are no words that can describe what this band means to me and how Stephin Merritt's songwriting in particular has helped shape me. With the latest news of Susan Anway's death, as well as the passing of LD Beghtol last year, I feel now is the right time to release these covers - despite not being songs either of them sang lead vocals on - as a small tribute to them and the band.
